Why more women should lift, don’t fear the weight room!

We are fortunate to work with a lot of amazing women who want to improve their health and work on their body comp so that they feel great in their own skin. There is NOTHING wrong with setting goals to change your body because you want to feel better when you get out of the shower and see yourself in the mirror. Or you want you clothes to fit better. Or you want to work on your confidence of rocking a bikini. Nutrition is a huge part of that journey and one that can’t be ignored but there is also a magic tool that speeds up progress, increases your metabolism, and changes body composition faster than most things and that’s weightlifting.

We get it, it can feel really intimidating to walk into the weight room at your local gym but adding in weights to your workout routine is a game changer! Especially as we age….we lose muscle mass and having a strong muscular system not only helps us continue to burn through calories efficiently each day but it helps support our skeletal system as well…which is super important to prevent injuries as we age!

There are a few things that I think prevent women from lifting…..

  1. The weight room is full of dudes and that in itself can be intimidating. You can’t let that stop you from pushing around some weights. In my experience, most of the guys in the weight room are focused on what they’re doing, they don’t care what I’m doing and they don’t bother me. OR, they honestly just want to help you and love seeing strong females lift…who doesn’t?!?
  2. You don’t know where to start. This is a big one and I dont blame you for being a little confused. If you’re new to the lifting game, there are so many different options out there and it can be hard to know where to start. This is when I would spend a little extra cash and purchase an online training program, they can be a really helpful start! Some of my favorites are from Claire Thomas (she’s actually from Portland!), Bryan Boorstein or Hybrid Performance method. You can google search any of them online, I’ve tried all 3 and loved them all. If that still seems too intimidating, join a class! I love crossfit for so many reasons but one of them is that someone tells me exactly what to do and I don’t have to stress about it.
  3. Your worried about getting bulky. Look….this one is just silly. Its not going to happen. I’ve been lifting for 10+ years and although I have muscle definition, there is no way I’m going to compare to a male body builder, its just not in our DNA. You would have to be consuming a ton of calories, spending hours at the gym and putting on any muscle takes TIME. I promise, if you push around some medium to heavy weights, you’re not going to become the hulk but what will happen is some amazing body transformations!

This Flex Fuel rockstar did just that. We’ve been working together for about 2.5 years and she’s had some major transformations! More recently, she started a new weightlifting program to go along with her nutrition and the results have been really fun to witness. She’s stronger, she feels great in her workouts and her body started to change in the way she wanted it to once she started incorporating more weights. Here is what Ana had to say:

How long you’ve been tracking with Flex Fuel: 2.5 years

Goal during the program: Lose weight, feel better about myself, improve my sports performance, learn a sustainable way to eat.

What has been a significant change in your life from before starting this program to now? How has your life changed?

My relationship to food has completely changed as well as how I feel about myself. Before starting this program, I felt that there were “good” foods and “bad” foods. I was in a constant cycle of depriving myself and then eating everything I saw and then feeling guilty afterwards. I would lose and gain the same five lbs over and over again and feel like losing weight was impossible. I tried multiple “diets” and none of them worked. I just thought that I was destined to feel uncomfortable in my body forever and there was nothing I could really do about it. Now I understand that there are no “bad” and “good” foods. If I eat something that I once considered bad or unhealthy, that it’s not going to ruin everything and it’s ok. I feel so much more confident in my clothes. My sports performance has improved significantly. I have never felt this good about myself. Although there is always room to improve, I’m now eating in a way that I feel is completely sustainable

Please give us a brief summary reviewing your experience with our program (positive comments are welcomed and encouraged):

This program has been so great! At first, I was scared to eat so much in an attempt to lose weight, but after seeing so much progress week to week I started really trusting my coach. It was amazing to be consistently losing weight and not be starving every night and dreaming about carbs. Having someone in my corner that has kept me accountable but also has been really supportive when I have felt down or frustrated has been amazing. There have been weeks where I haven’t hit my goals each day or missed days of tracking and Mallory has always been there, super supportive, reminding me that we’re all human and that a few days won’t erase my progress. She has helped me build my confidence so much. Even with how far I’ve come, there are days I look in the mirror and don’t see it. She has always been there to cheer me on and remind me of all the hard work I’ve put in and encourage me to keep going. I am no longer scared of carbs or embarrassed of wearing a bathing suit. I am finally feeling good in my body and I’m so excited to continue and see all that I’m capable of! I really don’t believe I would have been able to do this on my own without the help of Mallory.

Way to go, Ana!! Thank you for letting us share your journey!
